I've written up a Musing about this week's improv class, but I'll share that tomorrow.

Today, some thoughts on the first elimination in the American Idol finalist rounds, which took place last night and claimed one of two background singers in the competition.

After running through the contestants fairly quickly, host Ryan Seacrest singled out Brandon Rogers, Phil Stacey and Sanjaya Malakar as the bottom three. While many viewers have been saying Sanjaya, a weak singer, should leave, he was sent back to the couch, leaving Phil and Brandon on-stage.

Brandon was the one taking a bow, but because the show ran long, he didn't actually get a chance to sing one last time. If there was any surprise, it was seeing Phil Stacey in the bottom three, on the first week that he really showed any vocal skills. Maybe he's been coasting through on pity votes.

The same could be said of Sanjaya Malakar, who might actually make it into the top 10, because he's undoubtedly more popular than the wispy, forgettable Haley Scarnato.

It's not much of a surprise that Brandon was sent home. He forgot his lyrics on-stage, and while he's a good singer, none of his performances were outstanding. While fellow background singer Melinda Doolittle has come out of her shell and is shining, Brandon seems to feel more comfortable singing from the wings. With his Idol run over, he'll get plenty of opportunity to do just that.

Our doggie, Una, was due for her rabies booster and a couple other shots, so I took her to the vet for a checkup this morning. As always, she barked nervously the whole time, which was embarrassing, although I do think she's getting a little better.

She was very good for the vet until it came time to give her the kennel cough vaccine, which goes up her nose. They had to bring in an assistant to help hold her.

There were too bits of slightly distressing news. The first was that she's gained four pounds over the past year. The vet didn't seem terribly upset about this, though, and just advised that I increase her activity. He said many dogs gain weight over the winter.

The other thing was that her temperature was a little elevated, at 103.3 (normal for a dog is about 100.9 to 102.6) but the vet said raised temperatures can be brought on by stress. And she was definitely stressed out.

He let me borrow a thermometer so I can take her temperature a couple of times at home when she's relaxed. Already, I took her temp when she fell asleep on the couch as I was doing my exercises, and she was down to 101.9.

The Gryphon told me not to worry, since she hasn't shown any other signs of illness. Look at this picture of Una cuddling with our kitty, Luke, and you'll understand why I want to make sure she stays healthy. What a sweetie!
