October 16, 2006 - Cake Tasting |
|
On Saturday, The Gryphon and I had a number of errands to take care of. After grabbing breakfast at a local diner, we headed for the consignment store, where I had to pick up some items I'd been selling which had not sold. I took a quick glance at the sweaters but didn't find anything. From there, we went to Men's Wearhouse, so The Gryphon could find a new winter coat. The one he's been wearing for the last few years is too big on him now. He found a nice coat and used a $50 off certificate towards it. |

Then we had a little time to kill before our appointment to meet with our baker and discuss our wedding cake. So we stopped in Target for me to look at the sweaters. I bought a couple argyle sweaters, one in green and one in peach. We drove then to meet with our baker, Bredenbeck's in Chestnut Hill. We parked in the street and looked for a place to have a light lunch. At first we didn't have much luck. The first restaurant was just closing until dinner, and another restaurant looked like something that wouldn't interest us. Then we found the Solaris Grille, a popular restaurant that was pretty crowded. We should have known better: it took us 45 minutes to be served with soup and salad! The food was definitely tasty, though, and if we'd been at a more relaxed pace we would have enjoyed it more. So we showed up at Bredenbeck's about 10 minutes late. I felt a little better about it once the cake designer told us her morning appointment was 50 minute late! We introduced ourselves, and after telling us to get ourselves some complimentary coffee, we followed one of the cake designers upstairs to a consultation room. There, they had a number of sample cake designs on display. In the center of the table was a plate with samples of the different cakes available. We sampled four different types of cakes (vanilla pound, sour cream chocolate chip, sour cream raspberry and lemon pound) and four types of filling (chocolate, lemon, raspberry and butter cream). We liked the sour cream chocolate chip with raspberry filling. We also discussed the design. We'd brought some pictures with us of cakes we were considering, and after talking with the cake designer and looking through their book of samples, we came up with a cake with a geometric pattern in our wedding colors, with spheres on the top and around the bottom. By the time we were done, we were satisfied with our selection, so the cake designer told us she'd write up a contract and send it to us for our perusal. The Gryphon
made us dinner at home, a very nice chicken-based stew. It was a good
way to counterbalance the cake tasting earlier in the day.
