I haven't
shared any found items for a while, but I'm still collecting, so here
are some that are appropriate for the dog days of summer.
This first
one I found on the ground a week or so ago, damp from recent rain. The
marker had run, but you could still read it: "Designer Garage Sale,
(ADDRESS) Today".
I
have no idea when the yard sale actually took place or what sorts of items
they featured. Can you imagine designers such as Marc Jacobs, Michael
Kors or Vera Wang sitting around on a lawn in suburban Philly, hawking
leftovers from the summer 2007 collection?
A
customer pics up an evening gown, looks at the tag and frowns. "A
thousand dollars? This is a little steep. I'll give you five."
Vera
Wang's brow furrows. "It's already 70 percent off."
Michael
Kors sips his nonfat latte and mutters, "I knew we should have paid
for better signs."
The
next found item was a personal note, written in colored felt tip on an
envelope, which had apparently been left for someone who was going to
do some yard work. It reads, "Ray, need new extension cord for hedge
clippers. Thanks anyhow Mary"
I
imagine Ray, who probably has an extension cord at home, reads the note
and shrugs: "Woo! An afternoon off. Maybe I'll check out that designer
yard sale..."
Now,
the next item, strictly speaking, is more of a spring item. On the front
is a coloring project that someone printed out on a computer, where a
young child has filled in Easter baskets with colorful scribbles, filled
in with much care in a heavy hand.
The
freehand drawing on the back, though, is what reminds me of summer, as
it looks like a very colorful (admittedly phallic) mushroom or flower
in a field of clouds.
There's
something about that design I actually like quite a bit. It reminds me
of some of work by contemporary graphic designers. Maybe this child should
have designed those yard sale flyers.
And finally,
today's Zen moment, which speaks for itself.
