March 2, 2005 - Get it On

Nikko Smith

Tonight is the results show for the second week of American Idol competitions. I am virtually certain a few people will be safe.

For the men, the two outstanding performers were Nikko Smith and Bo Bice, both of whom took risks with their song choices and stood out. Nikko performed "Let's Get it On" and gave a really smooth, smoking performance. Bo, by contrast, performed the Allman Brothers song "Tied to the Whipping Post" and knocked it out of the box.

There were fewer outstanding performance among the women, at least in a good way. For some reason, three of them chose to do country songs or country versions of songs, and all of them were bad. The worst, by far, was a country rendition of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart," performed by Carrie Underwood. She really set herself up for a fall: not only competing with the legendary Janis but also competing with Melissa Etheridge's recent stellar performance of "Piece of My Heart." Her passionless version fell flat.

The only woman worth voting for was Nadia, who again, owned the stage. Her voice sounded great, and she was the only one who demonstrated the potential to win.

As far as likely candidates to be voted off, the ones in the most danger are Anthony Federov, whose performances have been fairly rote and unexciting, and Constantine Maroulis, whose rendition of "Light My Candle" was quirky in a bad way.

Among the women, Lindsey Cardinale, who so far has failed to stand out as a performer, and Janay Castine, who has similarly failed to make much of an impression and whom Judge Simon Cowell said was not yet mature enough as a performer to succeed in the competition.

Much of the snow we got on Monday melted from the roads on Tuesday, which is good because it got cold enough to freeze last night. Most of the sidewalks are pretty clear, so even though I found my dog Una's missing snow bootie on our second daily walk yesterday, I didn't bother to put her booties on her today.

It's not the snow that bothers me so much in winter as the cold. It doesn't seem to bother Una. I suppose her furry coat is warmer than it looks, short as it is. Right now it's gone back to the sort of freezing weather that makes you wonder why you came outside. The wind whips around your ears, snakes inside your coat, and all you can think of is how warm and snuggly you were in bed a short time ago.
