May 26, 2005 - Carrie's Day

Much as I wanted Bo Bice to win American Idol, it just wasn't in the cards. Country girl Carrie Underwood took home the prize last night. Of course, it didn't hurt Clay Aiken any to be No. 2, so I still have big hopes for Bo.

Hopefully, his American Idol contract won't prevent him from doing the type of music he enjoys, the type that he does the best, that sort of Southern rock he jammed on last night with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

(For those who wonder how Lynyrd Skynyrd can be touring, given they're all dead, read the bio on the official site.)

I'm not certain how Carrie carried the day, except that perhaps she had more fans using Cingular Wireless, which would have allowed them to register a text vote even with all the phone lines jammed.

Host Ryan Seacrest said from the beginning that the votes for the top contestants were tight, but I honestly thought that Bo would have enough of a female fan base to pull it off.

Myself, I tried registering a vote for Bo via the ever-busy phone lines and ultimately gave up, hoping that the jammed lines meant he had enough support. It didn't help that I was in the middle of a particularly vicious migraine and just wanted to finish my evening assignments and get to bed.

Personally, I think American Idol needs to revise its voting practices. Other shows have allowed people to use Internet voting, with certain restrictions, like a certain number of votes from a certain IP address or e-mail address.

Of course, this would sadly be subject to voter fraud, with, for example, students at a university being capable of registering votes at a given computer and then shifting to the next one in the computer lab for another round of voting.

But there's got to be something preferable to what they currently employ. Perhaps they could begin accepting text votes from people on providers other than Cingular Wireless? It's a thought.

I do think that Carrie is a heck of a vocalist, and I wish her the best. I truly think these are two of the most deserving American Idol finalists to come along, and I'm sure they'll both see success.
